What does an nZEB window system really mean? Complete technical guide: how Salamander bluEvolution 92 profile combines with Blaugelb Triotherm+ preframes, Saint-Gobain triple glazing and pre-compressed bands to achieve Uw ≤ 0.8 W/(m²K).
What is the nZEB Standard and Why Does It Matter for Your Windows
nZEB — Nearly Zero Energy Building — is not an optional certification. It is the mandatory standard for all new constructions in Romania since 2021, under Directive 2010/31/EU on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD). A nZEB building must achieve primary energy consumption ≤ 100 kWh/m²/year. Windows contribute directly to this balance — they represent 15-25% of a dwelling's envelope area and account for 25-35% of heat losses in conventional construction.
A nZEB window system is not just a good profile. It is an integrated system where each component is selected and installed to minimise thermal losses at the window opening — from the profile itself, to the glazing unit, to the spacer inside the glass pack and the perimeter seal against the masonry.
Component 1 — Salamander bluEvolution 92 Profile
Profile geometry:
- 6 air chambers, 92 mm construction depth, 3.0 mm outer walls (Class A per EN 12608), 3 EPDM gaskets
Thermal performance:
- Profile thermal transmittance: Uf = 0.95 W/(m²K) (IFT Rosenheim certified)
- Air permeability: Class 4 (EN 12207) — maximum
- Chemical composition: exclusively Ca-Zn stabilisers since 2008 — no lead, no cadmium, REACH compliant
Component 2 — Saint-Gobain SGG Triple Glazing
Pack structure: 4 mm / 16 mm Argon / 4 mm Low-E / 16 mm Argon / 4 mm — total 44 mm
Technical parameters:
- Ug = 0.5 W/(m²K) with argon 90% concentration
- Solar factor g = 0.34 (Low-E on position 2)
- Light transmittance TL = 70%
- Acoustic attenuation Rw = 34-36 dB
Warm Edge spacer: Standard aluminium spacer has λ = 160 W/mK — creates visible condensation stripe at inner glass edge. Warm Edge spacer (TGI, Swisspacer, Thermix) has λ = 0.15-0.2 W/mK — reduces marginal thermal bridge by 75-85%.
Uw calculation for complete window (100×120 cm):
- Uf = 0.95, Ug = 0.5, Ψg Warm Edge = 0.030 W/mK
- Uw resultant = 0.72 W/(m²K) — 49% reduction in heat loss vs standard double glazing (Uw = 1.4)
Component 3 — Blaugelb Triotherm+ Preframes
The preframe is mounted before the window itself, in the thermal insulation plane of the wall. Its composite material has thermal conductivity λ = 0.035 W/mK — comparable to mineral wool. The window is subsequently mounted on the preframe, which:
- Thermally insulates the frame-masonry contact
- Allows window mounting in the thermal insulation plane (Passive House requirement)
- Reduces perimeter linear thermal bridge ψ from 0.08 W/mK (no preframe) to 0.01 W/mK (with preframe)
- PassivHaus Institut (PHI) certified
Component 4 — Perimeter Sealing (Pre-Compressed Band)
Three-zone RAL installation:
- Exterior: Pre-compressed butyl band (Illbruck TP600) — waterproof ≥ 600 Pa, UV-resistant, 20-25 year durability
- Middle: Semi-open cell polyurethane foam — thermal and acoustic insulation
- Interior: Vapour barrier film — prevents condensation and mould in wall structure
Economic Calculation
Indicative nZEB system cost (100×120 cm window, installation included):
- Salamander bluEvolution 92 profile + triple glazing: €220-280
- Blaugelb Triotherm+ preframe: €50-70/unit
- Professional nZEB installation: €60-90
- Total 100×120 cm nZEB window: €330-440
Annual energy saving (80 m² apartment, 10 windows):
- Standard windows: ~2,800 kWh/year heat loss
- Complete nZEB windows: ~980 kWh/year heat loss
- Saving: −1,820 kWh/year → €110-140/year at current energy prices
- Payback period on additional investment: 10-13 years
